The Chrysian Calendar
Time in Angrea flows according to the dance of infinite suns and three moons, measured in spans and marked by tide days. The Guild of Timekeepers, under House Canae's scholarly oversight, maintains this sacred reckoning.
Understanding the Calendar
The Four Seasons
The year is divided into four seasons, with solstices and equinoxes falling on the last day before the following span (typically a tide day):
- Vierna (Winter) - Two spans: Nivren and Aethalis
- Melis (Spring) - Two spans: Karantine and Mermal
- Solata (Summer) - Three spans: Brin, Helios, and Ilionath
- Tumelis (Autumn) - Two spans: Canavin and Rimmar
The Nine Spans
Each year consists of nine spans of 33 days each, totaling 297 days in a standard year:
-
Nivren
Vierna (Winter)The first span of the year, marked by the festival of Nivrennight on day 1 and The Vertumn on day 33.
-
Aethalis
Vierna (Winter)The deepest winter span, featuring Aetherveil on day 9. The spring equinox falls on the last tide day before Karantine.
-
Karantine
Melis (Spring)Spring's arrival brings The Convening (day 15), The Masquerain (day 18), and Liberation Day (day 21).
-
Mermal
Melis (Spring)Late spring, marked by Meralis (day 15) and The Viridian (day 24). The summer solstice falls on the last tide day before Brin.
-
Brin
Solata (Summer)The first summer span, featuring The Memoriad (day 9) and Chaser's Landing (day 33).
-
Helios
Solata (Summer)High summer, with Helianth celebrated on day 27.
-
Ilionath
Solata (Summer)The final summer span, opening with The Pilgriming on day 1. The autumn equinox falls on the last tide day before Canavin.
-
Canavin
Tumelis (Autumn)The harvest span, marked by Luminary (day 9) and Garvan (day 27).
-
Rimmar
Tumelis (Autumn)The final span, beginning with Rimtide on day 1. The winter solstice falls on the last tide day before Nivren.
Tide Days
When the accumulated difference between the theoretical 297-day year and the actual solar year exceeds tolerance, the Guild of Timekeepers announces Tide Days. These exist outside the normal span structure, inserted after a span when specific celestial conditions align. Years typically have between 4 and 32 tide days, making actual year lengths vary from 301 to 329 days.
Days of the Week
Each span follows an 11-day week cycle:
Liansday, Torrisday, Batuday, Felday, Midday, Merday, Zolsday, Patriday, Kelvday, Restday, Markday
Restday and Markday form the "Endweek" - traditional days of rest and commerce.
